Dr. Karen O’Brien
Licensed Psychologist
Karen O’Brien is a clinical psychologist who provides both psychotherapy and psychological assessment for adults and adolescents. She completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of North Texas Denton campus, where she received advanced training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Portland Veterans' Affairs Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, and her postdoctoral fellowship at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. Dr. O’Brien has worked at a university psychology clinic, a children’s hospital, various Veteran’ Health Administration (VHA) sites, the San Antonio Police Department, and for various private practices. Dr. O’Brien was a teacher in her former life, a clinical supervisor for psychology interns and fellows during her tenure with the VHA, and she completed the VHA Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Depression Consultant training in 2023. She has a special place in her heart for teaching, training, and consultation.
Dr. O’Brien believes that creating a compassionate and non-judgmental therapeutic alliance is what sets the stage for meaningful change to occur. She has extensive experience working with individuals with trauma histories and understands the importance of developing and maintaining trust with clients. She also has years of experience working with individuals who have anxiety and depressive disorder diagnoses, who have experienced grief and loss, and who struggle with loneliness, marital conflict, and other common (and uncommon) life stressors.
