Dr. Joshua D. Essery, ABPP
Board Certified Licensed Psychologist
Joshua Essery, Psy.D., ABPP, is a co-founder and managing partner at Alliance Psychology. Dr. Essery is a licensed psychologist with board certification in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. He provides psychodynamically-informed psychotherapy and psychological assessment services to individuals, families, couples, and groups. In addition to direct clinical services, Dr. Essery provides clinical supervision to mental health professionals, educational presentations to organizations, executive coaching to business leaders and organizational consulting services.
Dr. Essery has worked in mental health since 2004 providing services in a diverse array of clinical settings such as; long term residential treatment, college counseling, non-profits, a forensic state hospital, psychiatric hospitals, a psychiatric emergency room, medical hospitals and private practices. His diverse clinical experiences and generalist training background enable him to work with all ages and most presenting problems. During his career he has held academic, management, administrative and leadership positions. Prior to psychology, he earned his bachelors in business administration from Southern Methodist University and worked as an analyst for a commercial real estate firm with international investors. He utilizes his understanding of psychology and experience with teaching, business, management and leadership to inform his coaching and consulting work.
Dr. Essery earned his master's and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology at Wheaton College Graduate School in Illinois. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (now UT-Health San Antonio) in the Department of Psychiatry. Dr Essery’s post-doctoral fellowship was at Clarity Child Guidance Center where he received advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychological testing, and family therapy. Dr. Essery then served at Clarity Child Guidance Center for over twelve years. During his tenure at Clarity, Dr. Essery managed the clinical psychology training program, was the Director of Psychology and later the Director of Outpatient Clinical Services. Dr. Essery has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Psychiatry Department at UT Health San Antonio since 2012 providing clinical supervision and training to psychology and psychiatry residents. He has a subspecialty working as the pediatric and adult Mental Health Coordinator for the Cystic Fibrosis Center in the Department of Pulmonology at UT-Health San Antonio since 2017.
Dr. Essery is active in community and professional service. He has served as president of the Bexar County Psychological Association and the San Antonio Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. Dr. Essery currently serves on the education committee and as Vice Chair of the Board for the Mind Science Foundation. Nationally, he has served on the Section V board of Division 39 of the American Psychological Association and as a committee member for clinical psychology exams for the American Board of Professional Psychology. Dr. Essery is a member of several professional organizations including the American Board of Professional Psychology, American Group Psychotherapy Association, Bexar County Psychological Association, San Antonio Group Psychotherapy Association, and the San Antonio Society for Psychoanalytic Studies. Dr. Essery regularly presents at local and national mental health conferences and has co-authored an article published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology. He has been interviewed by various news and media outlets to provide perspective on topics relevant to mental health.
